(Note: In case of any failure in the procedures below, try toggling bluetooth signal off and then on (on both devices) first and, if not fixed, try redoing bluetooth pairing)
Initial Configuration
0. Prerequisite
- Bluetooth signal must be turned on both on your BlackBerry and on your Playbook
1. Pair BlackBerry with Playbook if they are not paired already
- Go to the "Manage Connections" page on your BlackBerry and select "Bluetooth Connections". Set "Discoverable" status to "Yes". Click "Add New Device". On the "Add Device" pop-up, select "Listen".
- On your Playbook, go to the Bluetooth page. Set "Discoverable" startus to "off" and click "Add New Device". On the "Add New Device" page, select "Search" (not "Listen"). Your BlackBerry will then be found and its name listed. Double click on your BlackBerry on the list of devices found.
- You will now be prompted to check the pairing code both on your BlackBerry and on your Playbook. Select "Yes" on both devices to complete pairing.
2. Disable DUN (Dial-Up Networking)
Go to the "Manage Connections" page on your BlackBerry and select "Bluetooth Connections". Press the BlackBerry MENU key and select Options to bring up the Bluetooth Options page. Make sure "Dial-Up Networking" is NOT checked. Save the changes.
On BlackBerry:
1. Start Bluetooth Tether Bridge on your BlackBerry and wait for the Internet connection indication to turn on (the phone and the globe are joined by an edge)
2. Press the BlackBerry MENU key to bring up the command menu and select the "Start - DUN" command
On Playbook:
3. Select your BlackBerry device under Internet Tethering on your Playbook.
4*. Profile configuration (this step is only needed when you tether for the first time to your BlackBerry): Select "Add Profile" and enter anything you want to name your profile with and enter "tbapn" without the quotes for Access Point. Leave Username and Password empty.
4. Click "Connect" to trigger a connection attempt.
5. Click "Continue" on the Service Charge Warning page (see note below).
Connection Progress:
Upon clicking "Continue", the Playbook will attempt a connection to your BlackBerry. You can expect the following to happen in sequence:
1*. BlackBerry prompts you for permission: The first time you tether, your BlackBerry will ask you for permission to allow a connection from your Playbook. Note that you should check the "Don't display this prompt again" box so that you do not have to do this every time you tether. Select "Yes" to grant permission.
1. Playbook shows that it is in the Authenticating process.
2. BlackBerry shows you that it is entering Stage 1 negotiation with client as soon as it has heard from your Playbook.
3. BlackBerry shows that it is acquiring an IP address once the Stage 1 negotiation has been completed. In the meantime, your BlackBerry shows it is entering Stage 2 negotiation.
4. Both the Playbook and the BlackBerry will show it is connected when the process is done.
Note on Service Charge Warning:
By design, the Playbook will always warn you about potential tether charges by carriers whenever you use the Internet Tethering function of your Playbook. Note that Bluetooth Tether Bridge does not require or make use of tether support from the cellular network which many carriers charge a monthly tether fee or a per-use premium for. It emulates a 2G/3G/4G cellular network to the Playbook.
